So, C has still been feeling a little under the weather. And (I hope you’re sitting down), he is currently not eating dairy. If you can believe it, he’s even doing without cheese! So, when we were looking for a lunch stop today, we decided pho would be a great choice. I happen to love it, and a little soup would be nice on C’s sore throat. We decided on a little place we had gone to just after C moved into his new place. On our first visit there we both had shrimp spring rolls with peanut sauce (our usual) and grilled sandwiches (pork for me, steak for C). It’s been several weeks since that visit, but wow, those were some memorable eats. And for $5, it was a delicious steal! (I mean, come on, can you even get a sandwich for Subway for 5 bucks??)
So it was a no brainer to head back to Sonny’s today for lunch, when we were in the mood for pho.
Following a couple of shrimp spring rolls, C went for the meatball and steak pho, and I had the chicken pho. It came with the customary accoutrements: basil, cilantro, sliced fresh jalepenos, and bean sprouts. A little bit different was the substitution of lime wedges for a lemon wedge. But being general lemon lovers, we were up for the challenge.
The pho was good, but I have to say, not our favorite. The beef broth was actually a little strong, and overshadowed the other flavors, so instead of having a lovely melody of herbs, meat, broth, and peppers, it was mostly just a beef broth. So, slightly disappointing. And the lemon wedge just really didn’t work. Lime in pho, all the way.
The bottom line – if you want pho, go someplace else. If you want grilled sandwiches, this is a great place!! We’ll get back to you on the Pad Thai another time.
